Novel-in-progress: Leipzig
Leipzig is the story of Robert, a young Scottish man who studies at Leipzig University as a graduate student and falls in love with an East German woman. Magda is a loyal Party member training for a politically sensitive profession and her affair with him appears to go against everything she believes in. But as Robert’s love for Magda deepens, he discovers he has become enmeshed in a complex web of bluff and double-bluff he cannot even begin to understand. Ultimately his involvement with Magda leads Robert to commit an act of betrayal that destroys his life.
Years later, he is living in London and sinking deeper and deeper into alcoholism, when he receives new information about his time in Leipzig. Germany is now reunited and the East German archives have been opened. Robert returns to East Germany to find out what really happened and why.
