Soldiers at the Berlin WallNovel-in-progress: Leipzig

Synopsis

In the world’s most complete surveillance state, even love is a commodity and innocence is in short supply.

Set in eighties Communist East Germany, Leipzig is the story of a young Scottish man who falls in love with an East German woman – with disastrous consequences for both of them.

Years later, he discovers he was lied to about a central event in both their pasts that shattered his self-esteem and kick-started his descent into alcoholism.

The Wall is now down and he can go back to Germany to find out what really happened. But should he? And if he does, will he be able to find peace?

Leipzig moves between the divided Europe of the 1980s, contemporary London and Berlin to explore issues of betrayal, recovery, compromise and forgiveness.
