The Stasi are among us
In February 2011, Fiona helped organise a two-day special event about banned films from the former GDR at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow. The event, entitled The Stasi Are Among Us, ran as part of the 2011 Glasgow Film Festival (GFF) and brought a representative group of East German film-makers to the GFF, including Thomas Heise, Hannes Schönemann and Rainer Simon.
A selection of banned films seldom seen in the UK were screened, including Rainer Simon's Jadup und Boel and Hannes Schönemann's Saturday, Sunday, Monday Morning. There was also an opportunity to see Life Behind Bars, Sibylle Schönemann's documentary about her imprisonment by the East German secret police (Stasi) and eventual expulsion from the GDR, made in 1990, Claiming Space, a new documentary about the underground arts scene in the former GDR directed by Claus Löser.
The event also featured readings by the authors Johannes Jansen and Gabriele Stötzer from work they had written for underground literary magazines in the former GDR. Fiona read from her translations of these works, which were published in a special section in Gutter magazine to coincide with the GFF event.
