WORDS 2008 -
exploring the magic of words

Nicola imageswords 2008 is a collaboration based on new writing from the Edwin Morgan Centre for Creative Writing at Glasgow University, organised by Lucy Adams, Susan Kemp, Fiona Rintoul and Adrian Searle in conjunction with the public artist Nicola Atkinson.

Nicola created an art installation entitled 'In the blink of an eye' using drawings inspired by new stories from writers at the Edwin Morgan Centre for Creative Writing contained in the book Let's Pretend - 37 stories about (in)fidelity.

words at the mitchellThe interactive words 2008 exhibition, which took place from 9-13 September 2008 at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, attracted hundreds of visitors. Over 120 people attended the panel discussion on the craft of writing on 11 September, which featured Tom Leonard, Anne Donovan, Cynthia Rodgerson, Alan Riach, Michael Schmidt and Kei Miller, and close to 100 people benefitted from the free prose and poetry workshops that took place each day during the exhibition.

The words 2008 exhibition was unique in that it took the normally solitary process of writing out into the public domain. By so doing, words 2008 sought both to promote new literary talent in Scotland and to engage a wide range of people with contemporary writing.
